Landfill

A waste collection vehicle is more generally known as garbage truck and dustbin lorry. These trucks are used for picking up waste and then moving it to landfills or other places where waste materials are managed and treated. You can have their view mostly in Urban areas. Most of the time Garbage cart is mistaken as dump truck.

Kinds of Waste Collection Vehicles

“Plunk” is another word we use for LAND FILL, (If we consider the history it was known as midden, ) is a land which is use for discarding the waste material by burial which is known as a oldest way to treat the waste around the world landfills are the most ordinary method to well thought-out of waste disposal.

Many producers use internal waste disposal sites are also comprise as landfills as well as these sites, where they carry out their own waste disposal at the place of production. Other waste organizing purposes are also made on some landfills, which include the temporary storage, sorting out, recycling the waste material, unification and transfer (processing of waste material).

Instead of waste material, there could be soil or rocks on the land, which will also refer it as landfill, so that it could be used for any constructional purpose. The site may practice sever shaking of the ground (earthquake) unless it get stabilize.

Requirements for the site construction:-

A theatrical approach is required to construct a LANDFILL. Landfill designers do focus on the capability of land that it should be workable at commercial and environmental level in accord with exact requirements, which are as follow:

  • Locality of site:

    • Trouble free way in to transport via road
    • It’ll preferred if rail way station situated nearby
    • Significance of land (price)
    • Cost of meeting government necessities
    • Providence for community of location
    • Category of construction (single site may contain one or more)
      • Pit-filling:-Removal of cavities occur due to mining
      • Canyon: - A ravine formed by a river in an area with little rainfall
      • Mound: - heaping the waste above the land.

  • Constancy:

    • Basic land infrastructure
    • Liability of earthquake nearby
    • Water table
    • Water sources position nearby (river, streams etc)

  • Capacity:-

  • The future sketch of Refurbishment must be considered while calculating the available invalid space of the landform.
    • Reckonings of competence are based on
      • Mass of waste
      • Quantity of arbitrate and compressed soil.
      • Closure that waste will experience the leaning
      • Thickness of land
      • Erection of drainage system.

  • Protection of soil and water through:

  • Installation of liner and collection systems.
    Storm water control
    Leachate management.
    Landfill gas migration.

  • Nuisances and hazards management.

  • Costs

    • Feasibility studies
    • Site after care
    • Site investigations (costs involved may make small sites uneconomical).
    • Site respect

Operations:

When it comes to non-injurious waste special techniques are applied to landfill it, which are:

      1. restrict that to smaller area as far possible
      2. for volume reduction they require compacting
      3. soil layers are put over to cover it

Weighbridges are used to weight the truck or loader, which is loaded with the waste when it arrives on the landfill location. The waste in it is located and if it does not pass the criteria, it is taken back or else it is accepted for dumping in the landfill. Once the waste is deposited the compactors come in to action and have the waste compacted. The truck or loader before going out of the boundaries of the landfill has to go through a location where their wheels are washed. Sometimes they are taken back to weighbridge to have the weight noted for the truck without the weight of waste. This weighing procedure helps in noting and calculating the incoming tonnage of waste per day. Additionally, some of the landfills are equipped with containers for handling railroad.

Quite often, the compacted waste at the landfill is covered with soil every day. Some other materials, which need processing, are covered temporarily with cover-in foams and blankets. These covers are removable and can be removed for further processing of the waste material.

Reclamation of Land:

During the 20th century, human crowding has intensified and this fact has let the development of strategies for re-use of the landfill locations. The most common use for these locations is transformation of them in to golf courses, parks and sports field. However, landfill locations are today also being used for office buildings and industrial constructions.

Another re-use of landfill location is its incineration of complete trash at high temperature utilizing PAG process. This re-use of landfill location is being implemented in country like Japan and city like St.Lucie, Florida.
Impacts

Landfill operations are resulting in to a number of impacts, hazardous impacts. These impacts are of varying natures like lethal accidents, damage to infrastructure, local environmental pollution, production of methane gas and places for harboring disease vectors, adverse effect over wildlife and other such problems.

Dust and noise is generated by the WCV while they have to access landfills. These impacts can be lessened down with a little but effective planning while planning a landfill and its access roads and rails. Vector control can also be managed adequately with daily covering the location.

Locating new landfills is a difficult task as is found by new local authorities so, they require charging fees and fine over the prohibited acts for throwing away garbage of sites. it is to be added here that some landfills are operated at commercial level as business for it can bring huge profits but most landfills are operated publicly and are run be funds.
